Santo Domingo, DR.—As part of the celebration of Dominican identity, early childhood students at Cathedral International School (CIS) carried out a moving and meaningful academic project in honor of the legendary merengue singer Johnny Ventura, an undisputed icon of Dominican music and cultural identity.

The project, titled “The Johnny Ventura Experience,” allowed our children to gain a close, hands-on understanding of the life, legacy, and songs of the artist known as “Caballo Mayor.” Each grade level worked on two of the artist’s iconic songs, drawing from them fundamental values and cultural elements that served as the basis for various educational activities tailored to their developmental stage.

The classrooms were transformed into spaces for exploration where, through music, students identified characteristics unique to Dominicans: their joy, their energy, and their sense of family and community. Using the songs as a starting point, the children explored art, culture, traditional music, animals native to the Dominican Republic, colors, roots, and the diversity that form part of our national identity.

This approach allowed the youngest children to understand, at their own level, that merengue is not just music, but a living expression of our history, our heritage, and our traditions.

One of the most special moments of the day was the presence of members of his family: his wife, Josefina Flores de Ventura; his son, fellow artist Jandy Ventura, along with his wife Yamel Ventura; his daughter Ana Ventura; and two of his grandchildren, who proudly took part in this educational experience.

Deeply moved, the family expressed their gratitude as they witnessed how the younger generations celebrate and keep Johnny Ventura’s legacy alive, reaffirming that his music continues to beat in the heart of the Dominican people.

Through initiatives like this, Cathedral International School reaffirms its commitment to a well-rounded education that instills values, strengthens national identity, and promotes a love for our culture from the earliest years of life.
